It all started in 1949, when the inhabitants of the region had no defined landfill site. They then got into the habit of dumping their waste on the beach and in the ocean... It wasn't until about twenty years later that there was an awareness of the ecological impact and caused this unauthorized dump to close down for good. A new landfill was created inland, and clean-up campaigns were then set up. But due to a lack of technical solutions, the millions of pieces of glass that litter the coast could not be removed...
These pieces of glass polished by the ocean have therefore turned into small pebbles of all colours, and have almost entirely replaced the sand on the beach. Hence the name "Glass Beach", the glass beach...
