The Perito Moreno

Photo du rédacteur: Photography.Photography.

The Perito Moreno is part of Los Glaciares National Park. The glacier is 5 km wide and 30 km long. Even though the highest point of the glacier is 70 meters high, two thirds of it is still below the water level.

Even though they are impressive, all these figures cannot prepare you for the incredible experience of watching the immense glacier while listening to the deafening sound of blocks of ice breaking and falling into the water.

The Perito Moreno is also one of the only glaciers in the world that is still advancing. Indeed, due to global warming, almost all glaciers are retreating rapidly.

Due to its size and accessibility, the Perito Moreno glacier is one of the major tourist sites in southern Argentine Patagonia.

It is less than two hours’ drive from El Calafate and many tourist companies organize daily excursions. On site there is a walking tour that allows you to see the entire glacier. A restaurant has also been built there.

Glacier hikes have gained popularity. The two standard tours include a "mini-trekking" option, consisting of a walk of about an hour and a half, and a "big ice" version, which lasts about five hours. The companies usually provide the crampons to the hikers
