The Salar of Uyuni is located in the south-east of Bolivia at an altitude of 3,656 meters. It is the largest salt desert in the world. It covers 11,000 km² and contains more than 10 billion tons of salt.
The bright white salt is transformed into a mirror when it is covered with water during the rainy season (December to January). South of the Salar, South Lipez is a region of high plateaus dotted with natural wonders: colourful lagoons, volcanoes, jerseys, hot springs and intriguingly shaped rock formations.
Climate
The Uyuni salar is swept by constant winds blowing relatively continuously throughout the year . Between January and March, rainfall floods the edges of the Uyuni saltpan, which can be covered with about thirty centimetres of water, on this almost absolutely flat expanse.
